ByteEd Coding Kiwiana Pixel Art Activities - Supporting computer science week (Hour of CodeTM) 2021
Integrating digital technologies and Art, this resource teaches concepts of coding, binary digits and pixel art. Aimed at Year 4 to 8 students.
Students decode the numbers to create kiwiana pixel images and develop understanding of binary digits by having each pixel programmed as being black or white (on or off).
Three difficulty levels for different abilities with the chance to design, create and encode their own kiwiana art for others to decode too!
Computational thinking coverage includes:
algorithms
debugging
sequential instructions
binary
decomposition
data representation in images

A printable resource for all teachers introducing Computational Thinking through unplugged activities.
Updated 2023 to include more grids and our Explorer Ed robot!
Included in this resource:
5 x 5 grid
6 x 6 grid
8 x 8 grid
10 x 10 grid
12 x 12 grid
15 x 15 grid
plus, arrow command cards to aid students to create sequential algorithms for moving Explorer Ed around the grid.
These resources can be used with students to create their own map designs for whichever theme or context they are currently learning.
Teach Computational Thinking to younger students by exploring a zoo.
Two activities included:
Make a grid map of the zoo by rearranging the jigsaw pieces.
Create instructions for ByteEd to follow - to move around and explore the zoo!
Introduce computational thinking aspects - Sequence, step by step instructions, debugging and creating & following algorithms.
Resources included:
Activity explanation & overview document
Student handouts & printables
Teach Computational Thinking to younger students by exploring the Solar System
Two activities included:
Make a grid map of Space by rearranging the jigsaw pieces.
Create instructions for the ByteEd Spaceship to follow - move around and explore the the Solar System. Can students recognise the planets that ByteEd will visit?
Introduce computational thinking aspects - Sequence, step by step instructions, debugging and creating & following algorithms.
Resources included:
Activity explanation & overview document
Student handouts & printables
Teach Computational Thinking to younger students by saving and helping the town!
Two activities included:
Make a grid map of a township by rearranging the jigsaw pieces.
Create instructions/algorithms for the ByteEd Fire Engine to follow - move to incidents quickly. Can students help the members of the town and save them from tragedy?
Students will also learn about the life of a Fireman and the different ways that they help others.
Introduce computational thinking aspects - Sequence, step by step instructions, debugging and creating & following algorithms.
Resources included:
Activity explanation & overview document
Student handouts & printables
A Computational Thinking bundle of activities developing learning through unplugged tasks linking to a zoo/wildlife park theme.
Resource links to New Zealand Curriculum: Digital Technologies Progress Outcomes 1-2, and explores the following aspects for computational thinking through hands on learning:
Algorithms
Sequence
Decomposition
Debugging
and an introduction to programming languages :)
Included in the zip folder is:
A full lesson/activity overview with clear Learning Intentions and Assessment rubric.
Teacher slides to aid the teaching of all the content in the overview.
Printable student handouts for all the resources needed to teach the activities.
This resource is part of a larger module of learning, created by ByteEd, introducing Python programming at primary level (aimed at Years 4 to 6+). More information can be found at https://vrvoom.education/home/

When students are comfortable programming ByteEd around the Solar System, they then research into a star constellation and design a star map for the ByteEd Spaceship to explore! The teaching exemplar for the star map links to Matariki. Students can extend their programming skills by developing their own programming language for writing their algorithms to explore the star constellation!
